Can you tell us a little bit about your mixtape?
What do you think sets yourself apart from other rappers in the game?
“I’m more than a “rapper”. I’m an MC. There’s a drought on MC’S. I don’t care if it’s “Master of Ceremonies”, “Microphone Checkaz”, or “Men with Chest hair”! There’s just a lack of REAL people, telling REAL stories. When u hear me, you’ll get that feeling all over again. And if you’re a young cat, and you’re only accustomed to these ‘SWAG RAPS’, then boy you’re in for a rude awakening!”
There’s a lot of mainstream artists out there just in it for the money, and not really producing any quality music. There’s been so much of it lately, can you comment on that?
“I think what’s funny is that, if you told every rapper in this game that from now on, there will be no money from SHOWS, no money from ALBUM SALES, no money RINGTONES, or anything related to rap, you’d be left with a handful of dudes still here. Chances are, your favorite rapper would leave your ass high and dry. I’d still be here! I’m in this game for RESPECT more than anything. The money from doing what I love to do, is just a bonus. I can’t make more cats stop worshiping the dollar, but I can say that I’m running off of passion. When I don’t love it anymore, I might quit, but it has nothing to do with money. I blame executives more than artists for serving us this garbage music, and paying dudes for it. Now all these fools think this is a get-rich-quick scheme.”
Who do you think has been most influential to you?
“The Dungeon Family. As far as hip-hop goes, they’re the essential makers of the music that raised me. My older cousins were into Outkast and Goodie Mob so much, that it just rubbed off on me.”
What inspires your lyrics?
“PASSION and RESPECT! I’m what I like to call a “dirty laundry” rapper. I don’t make myself out to be Superman all the damn time. Growing up, I was the lame kid who they laughed at. I never got picked for any teams, and I never got any dates. Now I’m TITO LOPEZ, and I’m using this music to MAKE people give me my props, whether they want to or not.”
How would you describe your music?
“Something you can relate to. For some reason, every rapper these days is already a 45 Trillion-Gazillionaire on their 1st single! With an album that doesn’t even go GOLD! [haha] Where’d all the money come from?! And if you’re a drug kingpin making 3 million a year off of cocaine, then why enter the music business to get barely $1,000 a show? WE DON’T BELIVE YOU!!! In my music, you will NEVER hear me say I got something I don’t have already. I might exaggerate, like we all do, but I ain’t playing no fake ass character. You not gonna get me rubbing some rich and famous lifestyle in your face and lying to you. I feel like I’m the only cat that can take an average life, and make it sound so cool and entertaining on wax, without lying.”
What artists/producers would you like to work with in the future?
“Keyshia Cole! Keyshia Cole! Keyshia Cole! I love her if you can’t tell. [haha] I don’t really have a desire to work with any rappers, because I don’t feel like they’re any better than me. I like Keri Hilson, too. I think she’s the truth with her writing game. As far as producers, I’m working with everybody I want to right now. I’m doing music with 129th Street Productions from Canada, Blow Musick from Mississippi, Mike DaSilva from Canada, Southern Hustlers and DJ Unreal, and my label mate Nikko. I’m good! Shout out to C.J. and Smoke also.”
What’s a misconception most people have about you?
“Uhh…I’ve heard people say that a couple diss records I have on a certain rapper, who shall remain nameless, are stunts to try to get in the game. I really don’t care about bloggers’ comments, but that’s not the case at all. If it was, I would’ve mentioned his name just now. I’m sure some of you already know who it is anyway. I’m just standing up for what I believe in and I will continue to do the same as long as I’m here. Deal with it.”
What do you think about the current state of hip-hop? how do you perceive it, and what do you think it has become?
“I think I’m tired of hearing people TALK about the ‘current state of hip-hop’, and not DOING shit about it. Everybody’s been talking for years now. WE GET IT! Now let’s fix it, if you think it needs to be fixed. I was always told “I can show you better than I can tell you”! I think hip-hop is just hip-hop. The artists and executives are becoming lazy, money-grubbing, no talent, HACKS! Hip-hop doesn’t have it’s own mind, it’s a space, and these L-7’s are taking up too much space.”
How do you think president Barack Obama’s presence in the white house will affect hip-hop?
“It’ll affect hip-hop the same way it effects life in general. I think it will have a more accomplished feeling to it. You know, Regan era hip-hop was a lot different the Clinton era hip-hop. During the Regan and first Bush years, it was “The Message, Fuck the police, etc.”. In the Clinton years, it was platinum chains and big cars. This time it’ll be a little of both…celebration and real talk.”
How has hip-hop played a role in your life?
“The soundtrack to my life…PERIOD.”
What would you like to accomplish next?
“Securing a good financial space for my family.”
Do you have anything big lined up for yourself in the near future?
“I’m workin on a mixtape/EP now, consisting of all original beats. I’m gonna probably call it “A King Wit’ No Crown”. That’ll be nice, and I still plan to release a gang of mixtape material all year. Tito Lopez is the front man for the movement we got coming…G.P.T!”
